How You Can Shop the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale Like Melania Trump
UPDATE: I’m told that things will be restocked, so bookmark and keep checking throughout the sale.
If you’ve spent any time on YouTube in the last few weeks, then you know it’s the annual Nordstrom Anniversary Sale. In a fun twist, I’m building on my “Mondays with Melania” write-up and showing you how Melania (perhaps along with her brilliant designer and stylist Hervé Pierre) might shop the sale. You’ll see classic pieces similar to what she’s worn, edgier pieces that she likes to don for casual events, and some gifts she might get for The Donald and Barron. No slouchy (still overpriced? Let me know your thoughts!) Barefoot Dreams cardigans or Zella leggings here.
Reminder: The sale opens to all Nordstrom cardholders on August 13 and to everyone else (like me) on August 19. Experienced Anniversary sale shoppers and YouTubers tell me that there is very little sale inventory in store and you should buy online for the most size and color options. If you don’t have access yet, add to your wish list, then select all and add to your cart when ready to buy.
For her inauguration look, the First Lady’s makeup artist Nicole Bryl used her own line along with some others. The lip look included Estée Lauder Double Wear Stay-In-Place lip pencil in 04 Rose and Urban Decay ‘Naked’ cream lipstick, finished with Naked ‘Lovechild’ lipgloss. For a similar look, try the popular Charlotte Tilbury Pillow Talk lip set ($68) while it’s on sale. Since I have both Pillow Talk (left)and the FLOTUS favorite Urban Decay Naked (right), here’s a swatch of each.
Another set with similar colors is the MAC Love Me Lip Kit ($35)
For the inauguration, Bryl used the Estée Lauder Pure Color Envy Luminous Eyeshadow in Brash Bronze. This Tom Ford quad and lip set has a similar bronze eyeshadow ($88).
For skincare, the First Lady and Ivanka Trump use Nicole Bryl’s products, which make La Mer look positively affordable! Both have beautiful, glowing skin so only my wallet can argue with the results. The Nordstrom Anniversary Sale is an opportunity to try La Mer if you’ve ever wondered if it’s worth the price. Here are some La Mer products included in the sale:
Mini Hydration Collection Créme Set ($90) includes travel-size Créme de La Mer, Treatment Lotion, Renewal Oil, and Hydrating Illuminator
The Replenishing Moisture Collection ($340) includes slightly larger versions of these luxe products: Crème de la Mer Moisturizing Cream, Replenishing Oil Exfoliator, Regenerating Serum, Eye Concentrate, Treatment Lotion Hydrating Mask (1 sheet mask).
My favorite looks from the First Lady are casual days when she adds a pop of edge. A popular item in the sale are the Spanx Faux Leather Leggings ($64.90). They are also available in plus size. I’ve also heard that the Commando Faux Leather Leggings ($64.90) are a favorite and thicker than the Spanx versions. To the left, Melania has paired leather pants with flat boots almost exactly like this Blondo Camila Waterproof Bootie ($99.90). I also adore these Karl Lagerfeld Pola Studded Chelsea Booties ($94.90) below with the pearl detail. The juxtaposition of pearl, rugged soles, and leather is really fun.
Melania will often pair fitted pants with an oversized sweater. Even though I feel like we didn’t really get a proper summer, the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale is a good time to look at fall and winter basics.
One of my favorite First Lady looks is from her first Christmas at the White House during the preview of decorations. I may have been a little behind, but this is when the term “french tuck” was added to my lexicon. For a similar look, there are several options in the sale: Zella Wool & Cashmere Colorblock Turtleneck Sweater ($87.90), Free People Afterglow Mock Neck Top ($84.90), and Chelsea28 Cowl Neck Sweater ($49.90). For the lazy girl’s french tuck, I like the Gibson Cozy Twist Front Pullover ($28.90).
For denim, the First Lady is a fan of the surprisingly affordable J Brand. Kut from the Cloth is a great brand of similar quality and price included in the Nordstrom sale with a similar style of a mid-to-high waist and skinny ankle, available in straight size ($58.90) and plus size ($64.90).
Unfortunately, there are no white jeans that I like similar to the First Lady’s in the Nordstrom sale, but they do have these 7 for all Mankind jeans in Agave ($129.90) like her olive green jeans above that will take you from summer to fall. The pop of white makes it a great summer look.
The smirk at the press is also a must-have, along with these square Ray-Ban sunglasses ($112.90) or her favorite brand, Saint Laurent Betty sunglasses ($289.90). The most budget-friendly option is the Quay Australia Stop and Stare ($42.90), a fitting name!
The First Lady’s love for stilettos is well-known (more on those below). However, an affordable and casual footwear option she often goes for are Adidas sneakers. She wore the classic Stan Smith style ($54.90) when assisting victims of Hurricane Harvey. These are definitely on my must-buy list because I’ve wanted a pair for awhile. I really like the black accents because they give off less of a dad-shoe look. I also think they’re more versatile because when I’m casual, I’m almost always in black leggings.
I should also mention another brand that doesn’t go on sale often, Madewell, has two pairs of black jeans included in the Anniversary sale. There are these button-front 9-inch high waist skinny jeans ($84.90) and classic 11-inch high-waist skinny jeans ($89.90). Both are available in straight and plus size.
Be Best at Work
Most of the First Lady’s workwear is to highlight her Be Best campaign. While not all of us are back in the office yet, I picked out some styles from her past looks that are available in the Anniversary Sale and versatile enough for any office.
These houndstooth separates reminded me of the Dior suit she wore on the left. Unlike culottes, I think the Halogen Ponte Pencil Skirt ($34.90) will work better for most body types (i.e. short people like me). Whether you pair with the skirt or with the Spanx leather leggings or with black jeans, the matching Halogen Tie-front Mock Neck Top ($29.90) helps define the waist when wearing a busy pattern. I also love the houndstooth pattern with this Halogen Black Leather A-line Skirt ($139.90).
Separates are a good way to incorporate the unique details from Melania’s style into your every day wardrobe. While we all may not have the occasion (or budget) to wear this robin egg blue dress with voluminous sleeves, this All in Favor Ribbed Sweater ($28.90) gives a similar and is a more wearable look for work or weekends. A brand called 1.State also has a similar Blousen Sleeve Textured Sweater ($58.90) pictured below. It would look fabulous with the houndstooth pencil skirt or any of the jeans above. I absolutely love it.
We’ve seen the First Lady wear many beautiful floral dresses. The Nordstrom Anniversary Sale has several that seem inspired by her style, including the Harper Rose Floral Crepe A-Line Dress ($89.90), Maggie London Midi-Dress ($99.90) to the left, and this more subtle print Harper Rose Belted A-Line Dress ($79.90)
If you follow the Mondays with Melania section in my GetBrightEmail.com daily newsletter or John Binder’s wonderful Fashion Notes, you know the First Lady loves a crisp shirtdress. There are several available in the Anniversary Sale, including the Eliza J Striped Midi Shirtdress ($73.90) and the Rachel Parcell Tie Waist Long Sleeve Shirtdress in olive green ($79.90).
Coats, Coats, Coats
The First Lady’s coat collection is legendary. Burberry, Dolce & Gabbana, Gucci, and Stella McCartney might not be in your budget, but the Anniversary Sale has some classics and statement coats worth a look.
For a classic trench like the Burberry one to the left, there’s the Ralph Lauren Double Breasted Long Hooded Trench Coat ($149.90). I also love this Avec Les Filles Two-Tone Cotton Trench Coat ($159.90).
For a monochromatic look like the First Lady wore during Christmas at the White House, you can’t go wrong with this Cole Haan Wool & Alpaca Blend Wrap Coat ($229.90).
For some color, this Avec Les Filles Plaid Double Face Coat ($169.90) is reminiscent of two plaid coats the First Lady wore, one red plaid and one that was pink plaid. This one is a perfect marriage of both.
Finally, perhaps the most famous (or infamous) jacket worn by the First Lady was a budget-friendly Zara coat that sold out in minutes. This casual Caslon Hooded Utility Jacket in olive green ($58.90) is just as versatile and affordable.
You can’t go wrong with nude stilettos if you want to copy Melania’s style. I like the Jessica Simpson Pistelle Pump in Sand Faux Patent Leather ($49.90).
A textured pair similar to those above are the Charles David Maxx Pointed Toe Pump in Red Lizard Print ($59.90).
Gifts for the Guys
It’s fun to imagine shopping with Melania and her picking up a few things for the guys in her life. Her son, Barron, often wears cool graphic tees.
Finally, if the First Lady were to pick up something for the President, she can’t go wrong with a Solid Silk Tie ($29.70) — extra long, of course.
